This is basically a fairly standard build of a Flow Like Water deck, but I think it really shines in Gwen, simply because all the events from Protection will ready Gwen, allowing you to use Gwen's hero events to ready her on her own turn. George is fantastic for stacking protection (and hero) events on for use later, so you almost always have something to use once he hits the table.
Between both Bracelets and Unflappable, you draw 3 cards a turn. Hard to Ignore, Flow, and Electrostatic let you deal at least 2 damage (more if you play more def events) and remove 2 threat for defending, which is the main reason I'm not running Never Back Down -- you actually don't want to stun the villain, since you actively want to be attacked once a turn. Exhausting to defend almost never matters, because Gwen is going to stand back up anyhow.
As for defense events, I've chosen Defiance because it's absolutely incredible, both costing 0 as well as ensuring that you will take 0 damage for the turn, since no villain has an attack above 3, unless they have multiple boost cards. Sure, sometimes it "cancelled" a 0 boost card, but sometimes it also throws away cards with a boost ability that you wouldn't want to see. It also readies, Ghost-Spider, so it just feels like pure value.
The card no one ever expected to see is Expert Defense, but since Gwen has 3 DEF naturally, and 4 with the Vest, this allows her to block for 7 and then instantly ready. Almost everyone up until this point has played Desperate Defense for the same effect, and it costs 1 more and has 1 less DEF!
The last slot is kinda flexible, and several defense events could work here, but I'm using Jump Flip, mainly because Gwen's THW levels are kinda low, and it's nice to be able to have more threat control. Normally Preemptive Strike would be a high contender, but both Defiance and Preemptive share a trigger condition, which means you can't play them both for a single attack, plus they both would only work off of Villain attacks and not Minion attacks. The downside is that you actually have to have damage to prevent, which makes it awkward to play sometimes, which is the reason the slot is flexible.
Other than that, it's just good allies and The Night Nurse for removing status effects. Nurse could also probably be a different card, but there's not many other cards you want. Of the allies, Spider-UK is the one that could be swapped out, but I don't know who I'd rather have.
It's not the fanciest deck on earth, but by god, Gwen will live forever, and she'll be smiling the entire time.

May 01, 2022You know what, I forgot about good ol' voodoo. That's probably a good incusion. |
May 02, 2022Hey, I do like the set up of the deck but I did make two minor changes: 1) Yeah, Spider-UK felt pretty meh, so I dropped him and added Victor Mancha for a (hopefully) longer lasting body. 2) Dropped 2x Hard to Ignore for 1x Perseverance and 1x Power of Protection to help pay for some of the conditional restrictions/benefits that the cards provided, as well as a little be more spot healing for Gwen to hang around a little longer. Not to mention Hard to Ignore always felt weak in multi-player games. Overall it feels much better. |
May 02, 2022Also, what I had typed and what is displayed are apparently two different things on this site... |
May 25, 2022"but both Defiance and Preemptive share a trigger condition, which means you can't play them both for a single attack" why not? |
May 27, 2022They actually don't share a trigger condition, one trigger prevents the other from occurring. Defiance says when a boost card "would be turned up, discard it instead". Preemptive Strike says "When a boost card is turned face up" cancel the boost icons. If you played Defiance, the trigger for Preemptive Strike won't happen as the card is never turned face up, and if you are playing Preemptive, you've passed the window for Defiance. |

So, for this particular case, you cannot play both Defiance and Preemptive Strike, but you can play several interrupts for the same triggering condition, as stated in page 18 of the rulebook: INTERRUPT An interrupt ability is a type of triggered ability, indicated by the bold “Interrupt” timing trigger. Interrupt abilities may be executed anytime the specified triggering condition occurs, as described in the interrupt’s ability text. The interrupt ability interrupts the resolution of the specified triggering condition, and resolves immediately before that triggering condition resolves. • Multiple interrupts may be triggered by the same triggering condition. |

Page 26 of the rulebook: RESPONSE A response ability is a type of triggered ability, indicated by the bold “Response” timing trigger. Response abilities may be executed after the specified triggering condition occurs, as described in the response’s ability text. • Multiple responses may be executed from the same triggering condition. |

In short, you can use multiple Hard to Ignore for the same defense trigger. The example I gave to consolidate that was wrong and misleading, though. PS - How do you hyperlink the cards, btw? |

Jul 26, 2022Going to use this deck in an event this Weekend, wish me luck ;) |
If Spider-UK isn’t working, maybe try Brother Voodoo. I’ve found him to be quite good in event-based Protection decks.
