Hello! I'm excited to share this X-23 deck which also happens to be one of my all-time favorites. Laura is no stranger to taking advantage of incoming damage, and in this deck we use the Rogue Protection ally to aid X-23 in taking it a step further.

The Rub

  1. Honey Badger is a fantastic target for Protective Training. It boosts her health up to 5 and opens her up as a Game Time target. You'll get to experience that sweet, sweet ready for X-23 each time Gabby takes damage, such as her consequential after an ATK or THW activation.

  2. Rogue is the secret ingredient. She also benefits greatly from Protective Training, but we know X-23 likes taking damage, right? Why not use Rogue to ready X-23? That flavor makes sense. However, this ingredient gets a bit spicier if we use Rogue to touch Honey Badger, who triggers an X-23 ready whenever she takes damage, not just consequential. X-23 has so many ways to damage herself, she doesn't need Rogue's help there, but she does get an extra ready if Honey Badgers takes a second damage each turn. Nice!

  3. Northstar is next in line for Protective Training. While he's not the priority over Honey Badger or Rogue, he can help keep incoming attacks to a minimum while still triggering your Villain-Phase ready. Robust, consistent flavor.

  4. What Doesn't Kill Me keeps you ready and healthy. Straightforward. You'll usually need Grim Resolve to pay for the requirement if you don't have a The Power of Protection. A must-have healthy ingredient.

  5. Med Team really shines as a support card in multiplayer, but here you'll utilize it to keep Honey Badger and Rogue healthy to get more readies. Keep that ready flavor coming round after round.

Recipe Recap

Aim to build your board with Honey Badger and Rogue with Protective Training. Don't forget to grab other helpful cards along the way like Grim Resolve and Endurance. Play your aspect cards like Claw Mastery and go crazy with readies once you are set up!

Regenerative Longevity keeps Honey Badger going and is much easier to use when she has the extra health from Protective Training. Electrostatic Armor is a cheap way to increase your damage output in the long run, but could be cut if you don't find it useful. Don't be afraid to flip down frequently in the early stages of a multiplayer game. It'll keep you healthy and provide enough resources to build before getting those mid and late-game turns of spicy damage through multiple readies!

Looks really fun, have you tried it with sidearm? Do you get symbiote suit often?

@Dansome ! Sidearm is great inclusion for a bit more damage! I didn't include it here because I really wanted to highlight X-23 by giving her more readies versus focusing on ally damage. It wouldn't hurt to add it though if you like the prospect. I don't think it's a big deal to go a card or two over 40.

Symbiote suit is a low priority during the first pass for me, but can still help build your economy over the offensive cards in the kit or your support cards. I included it for mostly for multiplayer games where you typically have time to set up and you'll want the extra health and card draw to push into a difficult villain phase 2 or 3 or to simply to stay alive with the windfall of health. Besides Helicarrier and Grim Resolve, there aren't any other cards included to help build economy for longer matches.

That said, it can be a tough choice to choose between playing a Med Team to heal Honey Badger/Rogue or to play Symbiote Suit in the mid-game. You want to keep your engine going, but it's also nice to build up. Really depends on the situation, but I like having it as an option.

This deck is the truth!!!!!! Just for fun I tried it against expert Klaw, CAKE WALK. Never felt like I was ever in danger. Protective Training on Honey Badger is pretty much game over. Love this deck. First time I have had any luck in protection true solo.

She hits for 5 damage easily, multiple times per round. The synergy with rogue is really good too.

Getting those trainings on the allies makes them way more fun because you don't have to be so stingy with their timing. A very forgiving deck for a noob like myself.

@Piratecalvin I'm glad you're having a lot of fun with it. I think the interactions flow together nicely. Protective Training is so good here because it gives you flexibility to hold out until you can draw into Regenerative Longevity. And in solo games, you might just have enough HP to last you the whole game without healing, depending on the match up.

@Mcduder123 Thank you! Electrostatic Armor is a great card in this deck because you can consistently defend every turn against most villains and almost guarantee you'll take at least one damage to ready through Living Weapon. If you aren't able to add it, I'd maybe throw in armored vest if the villain has high ATK (Juggernaut, Rhino, etc), or just leave it out if it's a lower ATK villain. The main purpose it serves to wear the villain down a little every turn and ping off the occasional tough status card. It's not a pivotal card, but can be really helpful.

Symbiote Suit is actually in the deck list already, but it's one of my lower priorities due to wanting to set up Rogue and Honey Badger with Protective Training. It can really pay off late game because you are able to activate at least 4 times, not including Game Time activations or What Doesn't Kill Me.

If you don't draw into your other main pieces (Honey Badger, Rogue, or even Med Teams), that's when I'd consider playing Symbiote Suit. I prioritize the card a bit more in multiplayer because the games are likely going to be longer and you'll get more long-term value out of it. You also have more teammates to help you deal with the extra encounter card. Sometimes you just need to to heal because you aren't able to flip down, and that's also a solid play. Definitely a usable card, but can be situational on what timing works best.

Thank you for the great response! Some how I missed the symbiote suite(brain fart). That was really insightful, for I now the value of electrostatic in this deck. I wasn't even thinking about pinging toughs for better big turn damage. Good call.

This feels a lot like my favorite X-23 deck. I love Protective Training on Honey Badger. I like a few more X-Men Allies in my deck, and Utopia to get X-23 another ready. The Rogue addition is brilliant to touch Honey Badger to get X-23 another ready. I will be modifying my favorite deck to have her at least. I like Counter-Punch in her deck because it is at least a 3 ATK, and many times 5 or 6 or 7 with a Counter-Punch is so fun.

@weaves74 Thank you for the kind words and the insight! I love Counter-Punch as well on her and the first several drafts of this deck tried to make use of it, especially for the resource it brought for What Doesn't Kill Me. Ultimately, I just wanted to focus on the Rogue interaction, which feels really satisfying. I hadn't considered Protective Training in many decks before this, but it really fits well. Triage is a stellar addition to this deck and helps you get a nice burst heal on Honey Badger without having to play a 3-cost Med Team.

Honestly, I probably keep the 3x copies of Med Team around to help justify the Power of Protection, which makes Rogue and WDKM a little more consistent to play. Lots of room for tweaks depending on play style or scenario, for sure.
