No Allies No Problem

Playthrough versus Expert Ronan

Playthrough versus Expert Magneto

Have you ever wanted to play a game of Marvel Champions with no allies? To feel immersed in a solo adventure with your hero as the only hero? If so, Nightcrawler is the hero for you and this deck with no allies is powerful enough to defeat the likes of expert Magneto.

Perfect Defense

"Perfect Defense" is an archetype in Marvel Champions where the hero can defend against villain attacks and prevent all damage. It was a very unique and fun way to play the game but was limited against the toughest scenarios because villains like Ronan the Accuser could swing for 9+ damage per attack and activate up to 3+ times per round. Nightcrawler is the king of Perfect Defense. With Bamf!, Kurt doesn't need to exhaust to defend which means he can defend at least 2 times every villain phase and even more with access to readies like Desperate Defense. Then by increasing his base defense with cards like Kurt's Cutlasses, Armored Vest, and the Defense Specialist upgrade (from clearing Specialized Training), Nightcrawler can get up to a defense stat of 6! Combined with Desperate Defense, Energy Barriers and cards that weren't included in this deck like the new Northstar ally or Defiance Nightcrawler can mitigate all damage from even the strongest villain attacks.

Truest Solo

In a true solo game with no allies, we need ways to defend for ourself, thwart schemes, and deal with minions. Nightcrawler’s got the defense part on lock, and his identity-specific can handle some thwarting/attacking, but it’s when we don’t have his events in hand where we lean into the readying protection gives us. What Doesn’t Kill Me for some healing plus a ready to attack or thwart and Repurpose helps us get more impact on our basic activations. Having the Prehensile Tail to generate a wild resource for events has really good synergy with What Doesn’t Kill Me, providing that physical resource requirement every time. In multiplayer Kurt can focus more on defending for the group and will have more breathing room to rely on the other players to thwart.

Disclaimer

Allies are the strongest card type in the game and will general make any deck more powerful. To improve on this deck's strength, I recommend adding in:

-Utopia

-Forge

-Professor X

-Northstar

-Triage

-Polaris

-Beak

No cards need to be taken out since Nightcrawler has the flexibility to tutor Bamfs! and react to different situations based on what's in hand. Allies will never be dead draws and the other protection cards in the deck keep his perfect defense engine running smooth. With so many upgrades/supports, our deck will be pretty thin late game.

you should have play dauntless so you have retaliate 2 + electrostatic amor is one more

@Renatus I ended up not playing Electrostatic Armor in my games because damage during the villain phase isn’t a big focus in this deck, but i agree retaliate 3 would be gnarly :)

um AKSHULLY, there's an ally cos you have Daytripper, #checkmateWWF /s

i see you have a lot of suggestions of stuff to add, but nothing to take out? you said you didn't use Electrostatic Armor, so that wouldn't be a good cut for you? like do you think Energy Barrier and Endurance are important if you add in allies? also, were you able to clear Specialized Training reliably? seems like with 2 thwart events, even with his 2 base THW, it'd be hard. curious to hear your thoughts!

I tried this out against a random villain and pulled Stryfe. There were a lot of great plays and good combinations but got absolutely beat down and this was on standard level. Lots of events here so Stryfe was an immediate issue due to the number of events in my hand. It seems to need more thwarting some you only really have 2-3 ways to do that. One being the single ally. It’s pretty fun but looks to need a bit of retooling. Also, it seems that Stryfe is just a hard counter to Nightcrawler Defense. I’d love to see what changes you make. It did flow beautifully when it was able to perform. Thank you!

@dr00 Lol you got me! I was hoping no one would notice. I actually relied on Daytripper a lot against the tougher scenarios, her impact being the only ally was huge.

I definitely would not take out Energy Barrier or Endurance. Even with the "ally version" of the deck, Nightcrawler still needs to Bamf! around and take attacks. Energy Barrier's versatility to keep Perfect Defense online and provide damage made it the MVP card against Ronan.

Electrostatic Armor on the other hand would definitely be the card to take out. It's hard to justify doing so because it's so much value when Nightcrawler uses Bamf, doesn't exhaust, and still deal that pseudo retaliate damage. But against high pressure villains I couldn't get enough breathing room to play it.

@Dojireju2 Thanks for the feedback! Glad to hear the deck was at least fun for you haha. I agree that Stryfe would be rough for this list and perfect defense in general because some of his attachments require the player to flip to alter-ego and the punishments for having too much of a card type is rough like you mentioned.

I'm not sure what I'd change. I think against Stryfe I would scrap the list as I'm not sure if perfect defense would work on him at all lol.

I’m looking into building for NC in protection. I always appreciate your content, but do you ever play against a villain other than Ronan? It’s great if a deck and player defeats him, but mainly playing against him with your builds on Youtube? Is the message if you best Ronan you can defeat any villain? Wouldn’t this be a misconception? Especially for new players. You and Nelson are great in the MC community, but the decks seem like Tyler Perry movie scripts. I’m just asking if this is the goal?

@jerpanic I faced Ronan the Accuser once in my last 20 plays (I just took a quick look at my channel where I document all my games to see this). To answer your question, yep, I play villains other than Ronan and have playthroughs against every villain in Marvel Champions on my channel. Nightcrawler with perfect defense against expert Ronan was a highly requested matchup that several people specifically asked me for. That aside, I enjoy facing Ronan and want to show different ways to defeat him. The message is: I like Ronan so I play against him.

I play true solo. You recommend adding 6 X-Men only allies and Utopia. How will Northstar run in this deck? You mention not removing any cards. How did you remove DayTripper for the no allies challenge? Is this a new rule in 1.6, that a hero card can be removed. I have ‘t read all of 1.6 yet, and I’m not sure it’s all available. I’m curious to see how this 50 card deck works aside from Utopia. Well, 49 card unless if you keep Day tripper out.

@Web-Warrior Fanatic The Bamf! effect would not trigger the card draw on Defensive Specialist, right? Since it is not a basic defense?

Oct 17, 2024 nepresto · 8

@chrisrivers13 Bamf! allows Nightcrawler to use his basic defense without having to exhaust for it, so it does trigger Defensive Specialist.
