Imperfect Defense

Watch this variation "Perfect Defense" take down expert Venom Goblin here!

What is "Perfect Defense"?

Perfect Defense is one of the most popular archetypes in Marvel Champions where you "defend" against enemy attacks, take no damage, then trigger powerful effects from a bunch of upgrades that have a condition of taking no damage after defending an attack, like Unflappable.

What is "Imperfect Defense"?

This is made up. Instead of going all in on the upgrades for "Perfect Defense," I'm going halfway in. Spider-Man is one of the strongest users of "Perfect Defense" because of innate survivability and Backflip, the best defense event in the game. But this archetype is limited in its access to alter-ego, consistency against the strongest villains, and burst damage. So in order to not compromise Spider-Man's economy to do burst damage, our only protection upgrades are Unflappable and Hard to Ignore, and the only additional defense event is Defiance. We're going to let Spider-Man's hero kit handle the rest.

Playstyle

Just like all "Perfect Defense" decks, the goal is to get the green upgrades set up. However, with this deck, we want to prioritize our economy cards like Avengers Mansion, Quincarrier, and Helicarrier. Also expect to take tons of damage and flip over to use Aunt May to recover. Also remember that the only turns we can guarantee on not taking damage is when we have Backflip or Defiance, so these protection upgrades are useless except for on those turns. Once our engine is set up, we can handle anything. Prioritize supports/upgrades in this order:

  1. Avengers Mansion

  2. Quincarrier

  3. Aunt May

  4. Hard to Ignore x3

  5. Unflappable

  6. Helicarrier

Spider-Man is S tier

The goal keeps shifting. At first people said Spider-Man can't defeat expert Venom Goblin because it's too much threat. Then it became Spider-Man is only viable in justice/leadership in true solo. Then it became Spider-Man is only viable with ally swarm/web-warriors. Because of that, I put restrictions on this deck:

  1. Protection Aspect: The aspect that has most difficult removing threat versus the villain with the most threat.

  2. Few allies: I only added 5 allies to this deck, and with Black Cat there's 6. If you want to make this deck better, add a bunch more allies!

  3. No web-warriors: The strongest trait in the game which I love using, but not for this deck. If you want to improve this deck, add all those basic/protection web-warrior cards!

I love Peter in protection! Also, cool use of Meditation, especially when you can use a Backflip to not exhaust yourself. It’s a good call to plan on taking some damage so you don’t totally rely on lucking into backflip or betting on low boosts. While I enjoy Jump Flip, it was fun to see Defiance with its 0 cost. Thanks for sharing the deck! And good luck with the S-tier. Peter deserves an advocate!

Thanks, Andy! I can totally see Jump Flip as the preferred defense event like in your powerhouse Spidey protection deck. I opted for Defiance + Hard to Ignore, but it's definitely all about preference as I can see Jump Flip + Containment Strategy working just as well. You've always been a believer, but hoping others can see the light too that Peter is S tier hahaha

I'm a big fan of your decks and videos! I agree with you that Spider-Man is very strong. But I think his strength is primarily due to his economy. With all the new cards that have came out since release it feels like he can utilize a bunch of strategies and he gets better as time goes on. I would be interested to see though if you can build a deck using just the core set that can beat Expert Venom Goblin. It would be a Coup De Grace for Peter Parker Spider-Man.

Ah, this is interesting! I personally am a huge Gwen fan for a "perfect defense" deck, and I've been on the "Peter isn't good in protection" side of the fence. This looks fun though, I'm gonna have to try it and rely on your expertise.

While I do believe you can beat expert venom goblin with just the core (and I know you can once you add in the box set cards too), I don’t think we can void Peter’s tier because his strength is the most malleable. I think that’s the point. That’s what makes him s-tier.

It would be interesting to see all heroes perform with just the core box. Cable might suffer the most because his kit has only one side scheme, but it’s because we’re creating constraints that don’t let us showcase a hero’s strength. But I’d be careful about that constraint determining a hero’s tier

@Daring Lime Thank you! I'm really glad to hear that :) I can't disagree that Spidey's economy is one of his greatest assets. Thanks for chiming in @andyr, I totally agree. Spidey's strength is malleable and as new scenarios come out, new cards come out in that wave to match that villain's difficulty. That being said, I know you've done this challenge with your own justice deck for GMW so I think it definitely can be done!

@GhostWithKnife Hope you enjoy this deck :)

I like Peter in justice more for just straight dominance and control, but protection is a nice change of pace.

I’d argue that Shield Block is a clearly better defense event, since it’s prevents all damage you would take, while Backflip is limited to damage from an attack.

But that’s a nitpick…I’m not going to convince a Peter Parker fan :)

1st: I like Defiance as a defense - the ability to just say "0 icons (even under an amplify) and no boost" is awesome imo. And when optionally used with basic defense this will often be enough to trigger perfect defense too = great.

I wouldn't call +5 allies few allies. 3 total is a few. Sure, +5 is not lots, but it sure ain't a few. :)

2nd: I call hogwash on anyone who says any particular Hero can't do X aspect decent or that requires a certain aspect etc.

The fact that a normal deck consists of 15 ID cards and 25 (-35?) chosen from collection cards so 'these days', pretty much means ANY Hero can do ANY aspect as the larger portion MUST come from chosen cards. And this far down the track, there are plenty good cards to chose from in aspect/s and basics too. Some of those cards are MORE potent than ID cards. The whole 'deck design' section of this game is gaming out your ID deficiencies and using your strengths with the odd abuse of a rule/ruling. :) Also, the fact that "All Basic" decks exist is a testament to the strength in that department.

There are plenty of fun & varying in potency combinations/strategies and playing through them all is what we enjoy.

You got a good solid & fun deck! :)

@boomguy I can see that! Obviously I’m biased but I prefer Backflip as I’ve used it twice in the same turn multiple times which Shield Block can’t do, and in my one game with Cap I lost his shield due to a Caught Off Guard… but definitely debatable :)

@Sluggie Definitely agree with all your points. And you’re right this isn’t “few” allies… I’m just not used to including so little because I usually include so many hahaha. Thanks for your feedback!

I love Spidey and have him in green myself. Though I typically play in multiplayer. I also don't have him in Web-Warriors, but I typically don't run allies all that much anyways.

I'll put my 2 cents in and say that Quick Shift is probably the best defense card. It's only downsides vs backflip are that Rouge can't use it and you can't play it with your obligation out. XD

Mar 15, 2024 Web-Warrior Fanatic · 9261

@IcyHaze I love him in green although I don't typically run him there! Lol I can't argue against Quick Shift... but I feel like it's a little unfair of a comparison since it's not the actual card that's preventing any damage but Kitty Pryde herself. I can see that though!

I think it's worth mentioning. I feel like spiderman when I play this deck.

@Pots That’s very cool to hear! That’s one of the biggest things I want from this game so it makes me very glad to hear this list helps you feel that. Thanks for sharing that Pots!
