Poor Kitty. She's just chilling at the X-Mansion, lying in bed, when suddenly a nasty intruder appears in her bedroom. She's not even wearing her Blues and Yellows!

Kitty

No matter, the X-Men are always ready to jump into action. And with the help of Ready for a Fight, Kitty will be too.

This is a deck you can basically play on repeat without thinking too hard and it requires minimal set-up. The play pattern is as follows.

Board setup:

Have Ready for a Fight in play and try to have Practiced Plan in play. Play The X-Jet as soon as you can to give yourself access to a resource for playing RFAF down again.

Play Pattern

  1. Flip down to alter-ego after you're done doing stuff in hero form. Make sure to put yourself into Phased form before your turn ends.
  2. End your turn in alter-ego and draw 6 cards.
  3. Trigger RFAF when the villain tries to scheme and flip to hero phase.
  4. If you don't have another RFAF in hand (or you do but you need a to play it), trigger Practiced Plan. (Technically this triggers right before you flip to hero form, but it doesn't matter too much)
  5. Odds are you will have either a Quick Shift or Defiance in hand. Play Quick Shift if you have it, drawing 2 cards and perfectly defending the villain attack. If you don't, play Defiance. Neither require exhausting and either will perfectly defend the villain attack. On the rare occasion you have neither, it's ok to exhaust to defend sometimes, or just take the hit as you see fit.
  6. After the villain phase is over, play out your hand, making sure to play a copy of RFAF and a copy of Practiced Plan to the max of 1 of each card in play.
  7. Rinse and repeat. One you get more built out, you'll be doing things like:
  • triggering Moira MacTaggert to draw an additional card every time you flip up (almost every turn)
  • triggering Unflappable every turn when you perfectly defend to draw another card per turn
  • triggering up to 3 copies of Hard to Ignore to remove up to 3 threat from the main scheme
  • triggering Flow Like Water, Electrostatic Armor, and possibly Dauntless to do up to 3 damage to the villain
  • playing Mutant Education whenever you flip down to shuffle copies of Quick Shift back into the deck, making it more and more likely you'll draw one each turn. Having X-Mansion in play will let you draw another card here
  • using Angel's Aerie to recover health if you happened to take some damage
  • triggering Ready to Rumble if you were forced to exhaust to defend, allowing you to immediately ready again.

Help Kitty phase in and out as she dodges the villain's attacks and subdues them!

Possible deck alterations:

There is a new card in the Civil War box, Cuts Both Ways, that you can sub into this deck in place of Defiance. Cuts Both Ways will be better for faster incremental villain damage and scenarios with lots of minions. Defiance may be a better choice for scenarios with nasty boost effects, but really it shouldn't matter too much either way - the Protection defense event should be considered a back-up plan in case you didn't draw Quick Shift, which might be the best defense event in the game.

You could consider adding Build Support into the deck to bring out X-Jet faster. I think stalling until it comes up on its own is fine, but I'm not against the idea. I may update this deck to add it in the future.

Update: I have been playing this deck against Ronan and I'm proud to say it brought me my first wins against him in standard and expert. I just want to add the small changes I made to it:

  • Replace 1 copy of Ready to Rumble with Indomitable. This is a no-brainer for any scenario as it allows you to have both in play and it's basically as useful.
  • Remove Angel's Aerie, Dauntless, and 1 copy of Hard to Ignore
  • Include Build Support and Night Nurse (or Dr. Sinclair is a good option instead).

Good stuff! I don’t usually see Kitty with so few defense events. I like it

@boomguy Thanks! Yea, when you're drawing 7 cards a turn even before you defend and you're shuffling Quick Shift back in regularly, you don't need that many. Plus who needs readying or extra DEF or whatever else those cards give you. Even stunning is kind of counterproductive because you're missing out on the benefits of defending with this particular deck. Hopefully people enjoy.

This is a really interesting take on Shadowcat protection. I'm curious to give it a spin. She's not my first thought for RFAF, so hats off to you for coming up with something truly unique here. Also, an A+ for creative name and theme.

@turtle-dude thank you so much for the kind words. It just started by thinking about what RFAF can afford us, then I started to think about what types of heroes could benefit and I landed on this idea. I think perhaps I should have stressed the Mutant Education portion of the deck a bit more in the write-up, because that's pretty central to it as well. Perhaps I will edit it a bit.

Everytime I build a new deck, my fingers roll past Shadowcat, and I say, "maybe next time, girl...maybe next time." Thank you for the cool deck to try out.

Amazing deck! Kitty is my favorite MC hero, and this deck is a ton of fun to play (just took it for a spin)...thanks for posting!

Thank you so much for your kind words. It's so great to hear people are enjoying it. This is only my second published deck, but all these wonderful comments have gotten me working on the writeup to share one of my favourite decks I've made.

This is my type of deck! One suggestion - Replace Angel's Aerie with Excelsior. You have plenty of lightning resources.. and you have soooo much protection, and you are in AE all the time.. Meanwhile, similar to Jarnbjorn, you can spend as many lightning's as you can when you defend, doing 2 damage a pop..

@ProducePirate thanks for the suggestion! That's not a bad idea. 2 damage for 1 resource is a nice exchange rate and for a deck that will be defending every turn, it's a worthwhile consideration. I like that you can deal it to any enemy, even if you don't defend against them. It lets you deal with minions maybe before they attack, and it opens the door for Change of Fortune to be very lucrative as well, with the right scenario.

I actually have been playing with this deck again recently against Ronan. It wasn't the highest win rate for expert, but with the right start, it was very possible. I just updated the description with the changes I made to it for those games, but I think your suggestion is something to consider for the right scenario. I'm a big believer in adjusting the deck to the game you're playing.
