To date as of this posting, in comics, one branch of the X-Men is being led by Rogue. On her team, the Uncanny X-Men, are Nightcrawler, Gambit, Wolverine, and Jubilee. I really like all these characters in comics, so I thought it would be really fun to build five decks, one for each member of the team, and focusing on multiplayer interactions. I also picked some limitations:
- No Professor X, he's currently not around for this team. Also no X-Mansion for some reasons.
- No allies that are on the other main X-Men team, led by Cyclops
- Only one copy across all five decks of any unique support/ally
- All the decks can be made with one collection-worth of cards
Here are the other decks:
- Rogue (Leadership): https://marvelcdb.com/decklist/view/44942/uncanny-x-men-roster-2024-rogue-multiplayer-deck-1.0
- Wolverine (Protection): https://marvelcdb.com/decklist/view/44945/uncanny-x-men-roster-2024-wolverine-multiplayer-deck-1.0
- Jubilee (Aggression): https://marvelcdb.com/decklist/view/44941/uncanny-x-men-roster-2024-jubilee-multiplayer-deck-1.0
- Gambit (Justice): https://marvelcdb.com/decklist/view/44943/uncanny-x-men-roster-2024-gambit-multiplayer-deck-1.0
The idea is any of them can be played together at any multiplayer count (2-4) and one person can be the facilitator and build them all if needed. I'll just mention the overall conceit of the deck and how it interacts with the other decks. I plan on keeping these built for a while so I can pick two and play two-handed games at any time, with any mix of aspects!
The Deck
Look, ma, no allies! I stand by the notion that Nightcrawler, in certain protection builds, is worse off with allies than without them. This is one of those builds. The reason is he only has three damage events, and relies on retaliate to do that damage over time. If you're chumping, you're not taking retaliates. You could still use allies to thwart and deal damage, and we will likely play Daytripper quite a bit, but I guarantee you won't miss having no other allies.
The X-Jet is a priority, as it can help pay for Bamf! cards in discard, and otherwise the goal is to mulligan for Armored Vest or Kurt's Cutlasses. If you see either one of these, you're in luck. Secondary priorities include Unflappable and Change of Fortune. Once we're built, our goal is to block damage for the other players and tank minions with cards like Jump Flip and Side Step. Angel's Aerie is a great nice-to-have, and if you have Bamf! in your deck and see 'Port Away, you can flip down for free, heal from Angel's Aerie and flip back up.
For minions, Under Control is so, so good if you can also play Side Step or Jump Flip and hit back for 4 (6 with Kurt's Cutlasses and Electrostatic Armor).
Face the Past is also an amazing card for Change of Fortune decks. It gets your ally out, a minion, and Nightcrawler can just defend the quickstrike and ready, then draw off of it. It really helps him build out much faster, and introduces a minion to come back in the next deck pass to be killed in the villain phase!
Synergies With the Other Decks
There are some fun synergies:
- The protection upgrades could go on anyone that likes basic defending. Gambit, mostly, but Wolverine and Rogue could use Unflappable to draw a card from a minion attack, which isn't too shabby! Gambit is about the only other character equipped to make value from Change of Fortune though.
- Specialized Training is a steep cost but has such a huge impact in multiplayer
- The X-Jet is a card that people will likely ask to use often.
- Don't be afraid to defend for yourself with Bamf! and then defend for a teammate. That's extra damage back at the villain!
Roles
- Primary - Damage Blocking
- Secondary - Thwarting and Minion Mitigation
Other Considerations
The basic cards can be swapped between decks if you feel you like X-Jet in Jubilee more than Nightcrawler, for instance, but I did like the artificial limit of one X-Support per hero, it felt like a fun and interesting limitation. But hey, it's your game! Do what you want, and I hope you have fun!
