This deck has been updated on 5/3/22 here: https://marvelcdb.com/decklist/view/18958/captain-america-side-step-for-6-damage-2-0-1.0
Overview:
-
Side Step + Nerves of Steel = 1 damage + Dauntless = 2 damage + Electrostatic Armor = 3 damage + Captain America's Shield's retaliate = 4 damage + Energy Barrier = 5 damage + Flow Like Water = 6 damage for any enemy attack 4 or greater.
-
Flow Like Water is a card released with Vision's Hero pack. It's a game-changer for Defense events, and for the "No Defending" Protection builds. It deals the attacking enemy 1 damage for every Defense event played (It doesn't exhaust). In this deck that includes: Desperate Defense, Preemptive Strike, Side Step and Shield Block.
-
It also works great for a hybrid Protection build like this one where you'd try to use Defense events first, but have no problem defending when necessary.
Example:
Here's a scenario that happened while my son and I tested this build:
-
Cap has Flow Like Water, Electrostatic Armor and Energy Barrier out (Couldn't play Dauntless, sadly).
-
Cap draws into 1 Side Step and 2 Desperate Defenses. Villain attacks Cap. Cap defends with Desperate Defense for 5. Villain attacks for 5, and gets hit 4 damage. Cap readies, and gets a card from Unflappable. The villain attacks Wasp. Cap defends and uses the second Desperate Defense for 5. Villain attacks for 4, and gets hit for 4. Cap readies. Minion with 4 attack and 4 health attacks Wasp. Cap defends then uses Side Step + Nerves of Steel. Cap defends for 3 + Side Step, and minion gets hit for 4 and dies.
Possible Additions:
-
Jocasta is a great 41st card. She can hold Shield Block or whatever Defense event you want, and thwart decently. I'd just add her to this deck.
-
Coming out in Sinister Motives are two fantastic cards to add to this deck: Jump Flip is a Defense event that that prevents 2 damage, and thwarts for 2 on the main scheme if you use an energy resource. Perfect synergy with Flow Like Water and Nerves of Steel.
-
The second card is What Doesn't Kill Me. It's a Protection event that requires a physical resource (Perfect for Super-Soldier Serum) that heals for 2 and readies your Hero. That's fantastic for this deck and Cap.
This kind of deck makes Defense events a lot more fun. I hope you enjoy it, too!

Jan 22, 2022This is awesome! I love Flow Like Water and Defiance... they're huge additions to the Protection aspect. I made a similar deck using Scarlett Witch that uses Defiance, Never Back Down, Side Step, Preemptive Strike, Desperate Defense and Shield Spell. (Plus she has Magic Shields too). The goal is to play 2 defense events per turn... ideally one to negate a boost card and one to negate villian base attack. It was pretty common to use Side Step and Premptive Strike on the same turn, sometimes hitting the villian vack for 8 after Electrostatic Armor, Dauntless and Flows Like Water all triggered. I agree its like a chess game on the villian turn! |

I love the addition of Defiance. Having two cards that completely negate boost card damage now is the game changer to me. And defiance is zero cost!!! Theres a bunch of good protection decks that can be made now with this concept on my mind. I've got a good one for Venom too that maybe I'll post later once all the new Vision decks have had a go. (Side note: I love how there are 4 on the main page right now, 1 in each aspect.) |

Jan 29, 2022Not that anyone else is doing this, but if you happen to make over 150 decks for other people, your account starts to have issues here. Haha. Decks were really loading slowly, and I didn't get a like on any deck for 3 days. Once I purged around 60 decks, everything is working again. :) |
Jan 29, 2022Buildadeck is the account I created so I can build decks for people on reddit. I found out this account just couldn't handle the sheer amount of decks I had. Lol. |
I played a very similar deck in 3-player last night against Standard 2 expert Kang. This is the most fun I've had with Cap and Protection respectively... ever. A deck that I actually want to play again.
