Venom is an absolute Unit. He's beyond solid in every aspect and he can even make gross green protection cards look solid.

the main goal of this deck is to defend as often and as much as possible, we have a potential 7 defense while defending in this deck. we have access to great control pieces with grasping tendrils, mockingbird, and black widow. and we can use run and gun to ready our hero and weapons to be active in the player phase after completely negating the villain phase!

this deck is guranteed to get even your ancestors excited about playing protection, which is impressive as its everyones least favorite aspect. so some more about the build:

for the allies we are running some good blockers as well as utility pieces, black widow gives us access to some treachery cancel, brother voodoo helps us find key pieces, clea is the ultimate chump blocker, groot is another great blocker and mockingbird gives us access to stun.

For the event suite we are running some desperate defense to get us to 7 defense when we use our Def basic power paired with venom's pistols. we are also using shake it off to give us a tough status card after we take any amount of damage. Subdue is in here also to give us even more defense, its basically a 1 for 3 defense card and we can use it out of turn to help a teammate.

supports we just have helicarrier for economy and med teams to heal our allies and teammates, we dont really need it ourselves with the amount of defense and healing we have from project rebirth.

our upgrade package is pretty solid, armored vest to get a base 3 defense. electrostatic armor to give us a form of retaliate, 2 energy barriers for even more ping damage and damage reduction, hard to ignore helps us control some threat while doing what we already want to be doing. Indomitable gives us access to 3 readies after defending. and unflappable is really solid to help us replace some cards we will use in the villain phase.

I've been looking at Venom protection as well, because his DEF can get so high. Your choice of allies is really interesting but I'm confused by Shake it Off and Subdue. Surely those aren't defence events and won't trigger Unflappable or Hard to Ignore?

@adsarfsubdue is a form of defending in that you can use it when you are exhausted to reduce the hit another player or yourself would take. But it doesn’t trigger unflappable or hard to ignore that’s correct.

Shake it off is another way at damage prevention by giving people tough. A sneaky good way to use it is to use it on Groot after he defends an attack since he has high hp.

Does Grasping Tendrils trigger Unflappable/Hard to Ignore? It is a defense event, but it says it cancels the attack. So does that count as defending and taking no damage?

Black Widow is a clever idea. At first I couldn't figure out why you'd include her with so few resources to pay for her ability, then I realized that Venom can just take 1 damage to pay for it.

@journeyman2'When a player resolves a triggered ability labeled as a defense—such as “Hero Interrupt (defense)”—that player’s identity becomes the defender and is considered to have defended the attack', so I think so.

@journeyman2``@adsarf I'm not super convinced yet. Grasping Tendrils cancels the attack as well - so I'm not sure you can defend a cancelled attack. My assumption was no.

I never touch green cards but this will probably convince me to try it out. :p

@KennedyHawk 'A replacement effect is an effect that replaces the handling of one resolution with a different means of handling that resolution. Most replacement effects are interrupt abilities in the format of “when [triggering condition] would happen, do [replacement effect] instead.” After all responses to the original triggering condition have resolved and it is time to resolve the triggering condition itself, the replacement effect resolves instead.'

Which I take to mean that there is a timing window after you have played the hero interrupt (defense) and become the defender of the attack and before the replacement effect (i.e. nothing) has happened during which Hard to Ignore and Unflappable could trigger. You defended the attack before it was cancelled. But I accept I'm hardly the last word on this game.

Wont [Shake It Off] generating Tough status cards interfere with your ability to use Symbiotic Bond?

Jul 21, 2021 BananaCrapshoot · 4651

@Lerysh It could, it’s more for groot!

@adsarfbecause Unflappable and Hard to Ignore are responses the removal of their trigger from the queue makes it impossible for them to trigger. Grasping Tendril's trigger comes before either, because it's after the Villain initiates an attack against you. That attack gets canceled and now there is no after defense window because defense does not happen.

@Lerysh rule reference said "If the effect of an ability is canceled, the ability is still regarded as initiated, and any costs are still paid, so you are considered defending an attacked and card like unflappable can still be triggered. The designer has also confirmed this.
