I noticed no one had made a Nightcrawler deck using float like a butterfly, so I gave it a shot, and it's really fun!
Quick notes about Nightcrawler:
Nightcrawler really likes to defend, which makes him great in green, but opens up some interesting doors for us in other colors. Since Nightcrawler is a fantastic defender and gets so much value out of it, you can keep your allies around a lot longer since you'll rarely need them to defend you. That means you'll get a lot of attacks out of your allies. It also means you'll often get to use Bishop at full strength, which is a great value! Additionally, it means we'll be spending a lot of time in hero to defend. This makes it easier to keep confuse on villains, since you'll rarely need to return to AE to heal.
Why Float Like a Butterfly?:
Float provides insane value, moreso than most, to nightcrawler for a few reasons. First, because he's rarely using allies to defend, they'll get more attacks and more chances to get extra damage out of float. Second because of the multiple attacks generated by 'Port and Punch. While most instances of port will get you two attacks of 3 for 3-4ish ER (you're also using a Bamf! for that second attack, but you get other value out of it, so it's closer to 3ER), against a confused target, it's 2x4 for 3ER! If you can get more BAMFs in play through daytripper or other scenarios, it could be 3x4 or 4x4 for 3ER. Wild.
Piloting notes:
Nightcrawler is a great defensive character, so lean into his kit to build the time you need to find and setup float combos. With bamfs to get a free defense in villain phase, you'll often be able to use your solid 2 Thwart to maintain threat levels and deal with side schemes. Prioritize Kurt's Cutlasses, then Prehensile Tail, then Utopia on your first deck pass, then Float and Sonic Rifle to start dealing damage. Don't play Chamber until you've got a reliable way to confuse, but once he's on the field, he'll probably never leave your board. Your allies will help you thwart, deal damage and ready for Upside the Head. Don't forget, upside can stun as well! Really helpful to keep BAMFs in play to setup for that big closing 'Port and Punch!
Field Record:
Beaten Expert Klaw, Expert Magneto and Expert Crossbones. Be careful of Azazel, he can get multiple activations in a single villain phase in some situations, and that can become a big problem very quickly.
Build notes:
There are two floats so you can put one on another player, you don't really need it in solo. I think there's also a good argument for The X-Jet here, it helps you get and keep more bamfs in play. I also tried a version of this with Gunboat Diplomacy too, and while that's always good value, it felt silly to have two combos that each required different setup and just wasn't worth it. Heroic Intuition is also REALLY good for nightcrawler, especially with Utopia readies, but between the allies and the amazing Scout Ahead, I didn't feel i needed it.
Really cool to see upside and FLaB with Nightcrawler. Glad you made the deck. Looks like a great Justice flavor for Nightcrawler
