Introduction

I haven't played Champions much in maybe 18 months but I've recently got caught up on packs and giving it another try. I left the game about halfway through X-Men so I'd played Cyclops, Storm and Phoenix but none of the others. Colossus had never really interested me at the time but the second I saw Taunt I knew it was the Protection version of One Way or Another (my favourite Justice card) and saw it working with his Tough statuses (statii?).

This is a deck that will see Piotr practice his painting as much as possible. He's going to spend a lot of his time touring the X-Mansion with his friends waiting for the call to action, and indulging in his hobby of painting increasingly elaborate and ambitious pieces. Very calm. Very chill. Very Bob Ross.

"All you need to paint is a few tools, a little instruction, and a vision in your mind.”

Concept

1) Taunting

Taunt draws cards. Taunt hits you. Colossus Tough. Colossus not care Colossus just draw cards.

"They say everything looks better with odd numbers of things. But sometimes I put even numbers – just to upset the critics.” ~Bob Ross

2) Painting

As I started looking at Colossus for the first time I realised he was probably a flipper - he wants to flip form as often as possible. Every time he goes down to Alter-Ego he gets to shuffle a powerful card into his deck and flipping into Hero mode is the cheapest and easiest way for him to gain Tough.

"Every day is a good day when you paint.”

And then I realised than in Alter-Ego he draws 6 cards, and he has Piotr's Studio and I already had a deck that drew a lot of cards with Taunt so I could just completely overload the villain with massive card draw. So I did. With the studio, Weapon X and Cerebro going down into Alter-Ego is basically a Hand Size of 9 (your default 6 plus 3 from the supports) and with 2 of those digging to see Colossus cards you've a good chance of seeing the Armor Up that you shuffled back into your deck and bouncing straight into Hero mode. Then you draw ANOTHER card from Moira McTaggart and gain a Tough, then you probably discard the Tough and draw ANOTHER card thanks to Iron Will. So you probably drew the Taunt by now... it's pretty realistic that you'll quickly get into drawing 13-14 cards each turn.

"Don’t forget to tell these special people in your life just how special they are to you.”

3) Teaming

So far in early testing it's not really needed much more than that. The allies are there to keep threat and damage ticking over. Piotr likes Storm in particular for basically being a 4 Thwart and you can just constantly stack threat onto Establish Perimeter if you need to as you can probably self-fund the Tough status from flipping so often. The Protective Training is mostly there to give Storm more health so she stays on the table longer in that role. I like Iceman for controlling minions who might sneak in and steal your Tough status with a little 1pt hit. Armor and Forge are cheap little roadblocks for when you're not ready to lose a Tough status, and Forge helps you build your painting studio out and get all the best kit.

Acknowledgement

I hadn't seen Journeyman's Hit Me Babushka list until I'd finished a couple of iterations myself but it's clear we're working in similar space and both had put the Taunt/Colossus pairing together. I stole the Assess The Situations from that list, I've used them in other lists of mine but hadn't thought of them for this and I think he's right. A lot of the rest of the list is the same, main difference is he's got Limitless Stamina where I've got the extra Supports for mass card drawing.

His may well be better, I'm sure he's spend more time on it. But if that's the case then that's fine, after all...

"However you think it should be, that’s exactly how it should be.”

Great write up. I thought it was a great read. I hope your second go at Champs is fun, fruitful, and inspires more lists.

I just played two games on expert and I had a blast! I did not know Colossus could have so much card draw. So far I didn't had a usefull round to play Hard Knocks though. Will definately play some more matchup with this deck
