I remember hearing about this deck concept back when I first got the game. I didn't have the cards to build one at the time, but I also questioned its viability. Now I am happy to report, this deck concept is STRONG.
The deck Archetype is typically paired with Captain America, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. They all check what I consider the first box for this build.
Can you Assemble the Avengers? Assembling the Avengers, is as you can imagine, not cheap. This deck archetype requires a ton of cards and resources to set up. All these heroes have general use resources that can be used to pay for allies and supports AND there additional resources can be used in hero and alter-ego form.
How Fast can you Assemble? The faster the hero can assemble the avengers, the less time they have to hold off the villain. Captain Marvel has the Avengers on speed dial, sure they are mostly the B and C team avengers but it won't take her a whole movie to get a squad assembled.
Captain Marvel has card draw and extra resources available to her from the get-go, while the other two heroes in consideration have to play supports and upgrades to get there. Captain Marvel can increase her card draw with Alpha Flight Station as well. She also doesn't have to focus on playing signature supports and upgrades as hers are optional and situationally useful. This is not the case for Black Panter and to a lesser extent Captain America, who require more set-up to be effective.
I've Assembled the Avengers, Now What? Once the hero has the Avengers assembled, what can they bring to the table to end the game. In other words, what is their burst potential? One strength of this deck concept is that it puts half of your cards (or more depending on the build) on the table. Meaning you could reasonably draw half your draw pile in one turn, so what can a Hero do with their remaining cards?
Captain America falls the shortest here. He probably has the best villain control of the three so he gets to the end game most consistently but he doesn't have a lot to offer the end game burst. His highest damaging card is +6 with a stun, but if you play it twice in a turn the stun is redundant. Black Panther has great burst potential with Wakanda Forever. You can reasonably play 3-5 Wakanda Forevers the final turn, but that might cut into the Lead from the Fronts and Assembling the Avengers.
Captain Marvel can have a fully charged Energy channel. This means her last turn she has more options for paying for events. She also has card cycling which means she has more consistency in getting the perfect hand to end the game in one turn.
For now, when I want to assemble the avengers. I will be calling on Captain Marvel.
Which Hero do you call to Assemble the Avengers? :)
