Wiccan is the New Moon Girl

Hulkling vs Expert Ronan Playthrough

Strength in Diversity

This is your typical SiD build, but for Hulkling who is arguably one of the strongest candidates for it. Not only does he have 3 printed traits in hero form and can gain aerial through his Winged Shape, but he is extremely tanky and can easily heal up without ending turns in alter-ego thanks to Impersonation, Altman Residence, and Armored Shape so he can tank hits to the face allowing allies to stay in play. With Vivian, Hugin & Munin, and Gambit in play, SiD has 10 traits on the table to fuel threat removal/damage. The Triskelion can further that number and Suit Up makes grabbing the specific ally we want consistent.

Suit Up: Wiccan is the New Moon Girl

Suit Up

We all know that Moon Girl Suit Up is one of the most efficient combos in Marvel Champions because Moon Girl refunds a lot of her own cost and the cost of Suit Up...but what if I told you Hulkling has his own version of that and it's just as powerful? Wiccan is Hulkling's 2 cost identity-specific ally and can tutor any identity-specific event when he's played from the hand. Shapeshifter is a 0 cost identity-specific event which can tutor any shapeshift upgrade a.k.a. a double resource. Suit Up -> Wiccan + Honorary Avenger -> Play Wiccan -> Shapeshifter -> shapeshift upgrade only requires 2 effective resources (ER). Wiccan himself is effectively 1 ER (2 cost + the 1 resource of the actual card Wiccan - 2 resources from the shapeshift upgrade) just like Moon Girl so Suit Up adding 1 ER is negligible when they're both already the most efficient allies in the game. What makes this work consistently is that Wiccan's ability and Shapeshifter's ability can tutor cards from both the deck and discard pile, just like Suit Up can. That means there's no worry if the cards you're looking for have already been discarded or if they're still in the deck, it will always work.

Alter-Ego

Hulkling's alter-ego is insane. He only has a 5 card handsize, which means we don't care about ending turns in AE, but the ability to essentially tutor a double resource is extremely powerful. We can maximize this advantage with a card like Impersonation, which allows Hulkling to flip down and trigger his AE actions then immediately flip back up to hero form with the extra economy. These are the 3 powerful alter-ego actions we want to trigger each time we're flipped down:

• Shape-Changer

• Altman Residence

• Suit Up

Face the Past

Face the Past is SO good for Hulkling. He's once again arguably the best candidate for this card. Aim to be in Hulk Shape before playing Face the Past because after you play Face the Past, Hulk Shape can exhaust to immediate deal 2 damage to Hulkling's nemesis and Face the Past readies up Hulkling to then swing for 3 and defeat the Super Skrull. So Hulkling can basically draw 3 cards for free. If you're not in Hulk Shape, 1 Shapeshifter Strike can easily knock out the Super Skrull.

Shape-Shifting

Form changing has never been so easy. Accessing alter-ego allows us to change to any form we want, and tutoring Wiccan, a powerful ally that refunds his own cost gives us the economy to pay for our shapeshift upgrades while also managing the board state. Even against high pressure villains like Ronan the Accuser with 2 Fanaticisms on the table, Hulkling has the flexibility to easily change forms with this build. My preferred form is Hulk Shape because we have high thwart allies to manage threat and Strength in Diversity for additional threat removal. I found Hulkling's damage to be lacking in his other forms.

Just watched your Ronan video, wow that was impressive! Totally see why you’ve got Hulkling in S tier after that performance. Can’t wait to test him myself once I get my copy of the Civil War box.

He seems perfect for a SID build with how easily he builds an ally board and stays alive without needing them to block. The Moon Girl style combo using Wiccan is such a cool concept too, really creative deckbuilding!

@SpiderCanuck Thank you! Yea his economy is insane. I just played a 3 player game with him and on some turns he was able to play a Strength in Diversity by himself! Then a second one with help from the table…crazy crazy hero. Hope you get your Civil War box soon!

I share your love for Suit Up! But well done - I was not thinking Leadership at all for Hulkling. Can't wait to try this!
