"Hold In There, Citizens!"

— Luke Cage, to a bunch of 1HP citizens...

(Don't forget to drop a like/fav, it's always appreciated :) )

Overview:

  • Play Style: 1HP DEFENDERs archetype, with many tough and readies.
  • Fun: High (Misty Knight is crazy good here).
  • Difficulty: Medium (manage your tough and counters).
  • Power level: Strong.
  • Recommended Player Count: 1-4.
  • Number of cards: 42 (including 1 PSS).

Concept:
Play DEFENDERS allies, and rush them to 1HP for Righteous Purpose. Then keep them alive by giving them tough status cards, or exhausting them for Strength In Numbers or Teamwork.

Sort out defense with Luke's own kit + Iron Fist + tons of Defensive Formation.

Attack and Thwart with a 6 THW/ATK Misty Knight (Righteous Purpose, Defensive Formation and Inspired). Or a giant Hulk! Then ready them, give them more tough status cards, and do it again!

How to play this deck / combos:

1. Early game

2. Gameplay + combos

  • Try to always take the hit for your allies. But don't hesitate to use some "block counters" from Defensive Formation to...defend if need be :p
  • Misty Knight goes to 1+2+2+1 THW/ATK with Righteous Purpose, Defensive Formation and Inspired.
  • She can activate/exhaust multiple times per turn with Fogwell's Gym and Command Teams.
  • Hulk goes to 2+2+1+X ATK with Righteous Purpose and tough status cards to keep him alive. He's slow but I like him in this deck as he can reach 1Hp in one turn (not necessarily the turn you play him) with our Command Teams.
  • Sidearms could either go on Hulk or Mighty Knight depending on the retaliate situation.
  • Teamwork increase even more the value of these two, without costing you a tough status card, nor consequential damage! Luke Cage is able to ready a lot so you should always be able to play it.
  • Iron Fist can tank minions, along side Metal Bracer. Try to keep him alive as long as possible because Power Man and Iron Fist is a pretty good tough generator.
  • Valkyrie is a great safety net that can hit/thwart hard once at 1HP.
  • In multiplayer, Hellcat (not included here) is super cool and fun! You can play her for free and use 2 Command Team (or even 3 + Defensive Formation) to deal/thwart 2+2+4+4=12

Other cards to consider:

  • Build Support + Knowhere for a 5 allies limit instead of 4. I started with this, but it is too many cards :p
  • You can mix and match the Strength In Numberss and Teamworks to your preference. I feel like this is the best loadout.
  • In multiplayer, Hellcat is super cool, see above to understand why. I didn't really need here in solo as this is I think this is just a win-more combo :)
  • Avengers Mansion.
  • Professor X! I'm tired of him, but you probably should include him for most true solo games! ;)

Anyway, enjoy, have fun,
and don't forget to drop a like/fav, it's always appreciated :)

This looks great love the leaning into 1HP and using SiN or Teamwork to extend them. Great work!

@Castlefrank47 Thanks! Precon was pretty bad,and hopefully this makes it much more viable :)

Also, I added this text to explain why Hellcat isn't included here:

  • In multiplayer, Hellcat (not included here) is super cool and fun! You can play her for free and use 2 Command Team (or even 3 + Defensive Formation) to deal/thwart 2+2+4+4=12!
  • I didn't really need here for the solo version of this deck as this is I think this is just a win-more combo :)

Amazing! After playing Luke Cage's modified precon I didn't know where to go with him in Leadership. This looks like it is a great direction.

Is this a Luke Cage deck? Or will it work just as well for other Defenders? Or even any hero? The only cards that care about the Defender trait are Defensive Formation (but only allies) and She-Hulk. What other heroes would you suggest for this archetype? (1 HP Defenders Leadership)

@svendj Thank you very much :)
Luke brings Fogwell's Gym to the table. It gives you 1 free ready on any ally (hum..hum Misty Knight... :p ).

That being said, the archetype works pretty well even without it (I did not draw the Gym every time in my tests). I think this archetype is good in both cases:

  • A very tanky hero that can defend for his allies (Nightcrawler, Colossus, Ghost Spider, SP//dr, etc.).
  • A squishy hero that is rich enough to get running pretty fast with 1 ally + 1 Defensive Formation . (Jubilee, BP Shuri, Phoenix, etc.) Here you'd often use the tough in a traditional way (defending instead of attacking/thwarting, at least early game), but it's still great value!

I haven't tried it yet of course.

I have a jessica jones version and a nebula version - the nebula version allows knowhere without issues, and build support is used for the quincarrier. Nebula needed an ally engine subservient to her executing techniques. Jessica uses mass attack and mission planning instead of team work to lean into her thwarting strengths.

Suggestion - what do you think about Mission Planning? you already have everyone on 1 hp, why not just reduce their consequential to 0 - they can run another round with Harlem's hero and command teams. just keep readying them and go again!

Fun deck, and used it for my first play of Luke. I just finished playing 2 handed with Jessica Jones (https://marvelcdb.com/decklist/view/65135/jessica-jones-taking-wolverine-out-for-a-walk-1.0#) against Tower Defense (thought it was thematic being New York). Command Team and Inspired worked great on Jessica's Cameo deck. I did get Iron Fist, Misty Knight, and Valkyrie out who all worked out so well with Righteous Purpose. I was able to finish the game with a "Sweet Christmas!". Great deck; thanks.

@ProducePirate Yeah, Knowhere is great with this archetype, but you need someone who can take some hits (I considered Groot as well ;) ).

@Viravandrel Mision planning is a good AND fun card. If you feel you have the economy, go for it. I feel like adding 3+ cards with a condition (you need to add more PSS in the deck and defeat them) isn't so good. Defensive Formation simply fills the same role in the deck: "preventing" consequential damage. Mission planning prevents it for everyone for a round, whereas DF prevents it for 3 allies across 3 turns BUT is an on-demand effect (not an event).

Considering you need at least 1 DF to enable Misty Knight effect, the deck is just more consistent by going all-in with this card. But I'm sure a deck combining both cards and their prerequisites would be very efficient. Resources and playing all the combo pieces is the issue imho.

@BlueRiver Thanks, glad to hear it performed well! :)
(especially with this cool JJ Cameo deck!)

@Viravandrel Oh and I forgot that obviously DF also help you defend/keep tough status :) So yeah, you really want to keep DF (and Command Teams) if you add MP, but that's a LOT of cards :p

well, por que no los dos or however its spelled :P ? I see you want to build for closer to 40 cards, I added everything needed and even managed to squeeze some Get Ready and 3 copies of Inspired. I always play with at least 2 other people so there is always some hard justice to keep us alive during first turns and leadership is usually left in alter ego first turn to build up supports/upgrades. We play on Heroic so the challenge is there but it also requires strong decks with good thwart/damage output because there is a lot to deal with instead of fast ones to deal with different threat as in solo play. Lucas pack just arrived, I havent had the opportunity to test it yet

but overall nice deck, I like your version too.

Aug 30, 2026 Game Design Raccoon · 3874

@Viravandrel Yeah if you feel comfortable with thicker deck, go for it. I often playtest my decks with 45+ cards (I mostly ply 2p or solo) and then I thin until I reach something consistent and fast enough to setup :)

Aug 30, 2026 Viravandrel · 19

Yeah that is the eternal question between fast setup (40 cards, only the essence) or potential (50, slower but better when fully built). I love all those slowly built monster steamrollers which have the potential of 100+ dmg/thwart per turn but thats just me.

I think that Lucas should be able with good build to get to around 60, he is pretty powerful. his ability to basically ignore villain dmg adds to overall strength. Im already set to play this wednesday with my playgroup so Jessica and Lucas can be playstested thoroughly.

I had to play this again. Just finished 2 handed again with Jessica Jones with the same deck against Hammerhead in The Getaway. I got Hulk out first turn. I was able to finish the game with Hulk hitting for 8, then down to 1 HP, was able to ready him and hit for 10! Loving those Rage counters. Using Defensive Formation on Hulk also had Luke Cage keep his Toughs which made using his hero kit so much easier. Great deck.

@BlueRiver Thanks again! Really cool to see people try the deck out multiple times :)
